|| THE NECESSITY OF UPASANA ||

" The senses of an ignorant person with a restless mind , are not under one's control , like the indisciplined horses under an incompetent coachdriver . "

Kath Upanishad ( 1 , 3 , 5 )

The senses of the so-called learned but unpractical one , whose mind is disturbed , are like the obstinate and uncontrollable horses of a chariot . Instead of taking the chariot to the desired destination , they will overturn it , along with the one seated therein , into the ditch . As a result , one will only have to repent and weep .

If however , you desire to be saved from the horrible hell of this life , it is necessary for you to train the horses ( the senses ) , to be disciplined so that they may run only on the right path of restraint and regulation ( Yam and Niyam ) . But , you may try as you like , if your coachdriver is of dim vision , one-eyed or blind , you are sure to be thrown into the mud or quicksand only to be injured and ultimately to weep and repent .

O my friends ! It is nothing but to invite pain and sufferings , if you make your defective intellect your coachdriver or guide for your life-chariot in this world . Now , please do listen to my advice attentively .

Victory lies in giving the reins of your mind to Lord Krishna < : GOD : > , and , then , be free from any danger whatsoever . Lord Krishna will surely take your chariot safely away with success from the battlefield ( Kurukshetra * ) of this world . Lord Krishna is , as you know , a renowned expert in driving the chariot .

It is , therefore , very essential to be nearest to GOD , viz to have Upasana , after surrendering the chariot ( the body ) , the horses ( the senses ) and the reins ( the mind ) to Lord Krishna .

In Bhagwat Geeta , Lord Krishna has said ,

" Give up all other dependence and take refuge unto Me alone ; I shall save thee from all sins ; hence do not worry . "

( Bhag Gita XVIII , 66 )

" By coming in contact with the worldly objects , a desire is created and the ( non-fulfilment of ) desire creates disappointment and anger . "

( Bhag Gita II , 62 ) .

By desiring worldly pleasures and craving for the objects of senses , the condition of an ordinary person becomes like that of a hollow Pumpkin that floats at the mercy of the winds and the waves .

The attachment with the sense objects is the root cause of all the troubles .

If such an attachment is there with all its evilness < : Ignorance : > , and , if there is no medicine ( such as devotion to GOD , Upasana and self-introspection ) , to cure the evil effects , it will only end in spiritual suicide , as a result of which one will have to suffer the severest sufferings of the heinous hell —

" a region void of light and covered with pitch darkness . "

( Isha Upanishad 3 ) .

If , by falling upon a bed of thorns you are somehow reminded of GOD , O dear friends , when you discover that you are forgetting GOD , due to your involvement in worldly affairs , throw yourselves on the pointed thorns . In this way , GOD is sure to be revived to your memory , due to pain .

Weeping in seclusion , beating your breast and crying in privacy in repentance and out of love for GOD , shall certainly do good to you .

( NOTE : * Kurukshetra was the battlefield where the great war of Mahabharat was fought and where Lord Krishna acted as the guide and coachdriver of Arjuna , the victor . )
