|| 07 | VEDANTA : A WAY TO REALIZATION | VWR | PART 001 ||

I kept on pondering whether young Yudhisthara had really created a wonder . No ! Yudhisthara simply proved unison between precept and practice .

Non-Duality , Oneness , is the way to Realization . That is Truth .

And that made Yudhisthara , Dharma Raj — Emperor of Righteousness and Honesty .

Similarly , what is the firm determination which leads to Realization was shown by Dev Vrat , better known as Bhisma Pitamaha in the epic Mahabharat era .

There can be no difference between utterance and action .

Non-Duality — the ultimate Truth , Bhisma established . Bhisma pronounces :

" I may have to renounce the pleasures of the three worlds , the suzerainty or authority over Heaven , or even anything higher and more important than these , but I cannot deviate from the path of Truth .

The solid earth may give up its property ( odour ) , water may lose its taste , light may fail to be the source of visibility , air may obliterate its property ( touch ) , the sun may be cold , the moon may be hot , ether may be uncommunicative , Indra may renounce glory and Yama may become unjust , but I will not turn away from Truth . "

The above was the resolve of Bhishma . The Great Bhishma lived upto the pledge .

" So , too , I will also have the same motto in my life . Whatever I have taken to be the Truth , I must act upto it , even though the whole world may oppose me . I have come to realise that it is wrong to lose temper . I have , accordingly , decided never to yield to anger . "

I , further , argue with myself ,

" It has often been said by the great souls that whatsoever happens , happens for our best . Is it true ?

My limited experience does not entitle me to criticise them . I have no reason to disbelieve them . It is all for our best .

If it is so , and I am convinced that it is so , then , there is no reason for me to be sorry or resentful on any account .

If , however , I fret or frown , I will be a fool , like an ignorant child who becomes afraid of something which is neither fearful or disdainful .

Why should I , then , resent , fret and frown at the worldly affairs ? Both the pain and pleasure are stepping stones in my path of evolution . I should not , therefore , feel discouraged .

I go on asking myself . Whatever I mistake as bad from my point of view , is ultimately for my good . Why should I , then , resent or be annoyed ? "

A poet says :

" My destiny has been written by GOD Itself . GOD is experienced and has also a good handwriting . GOD cannot write cursively or wrongly . "

This Universe is said to be a mere recreation of GOD . It also be called Its playground .

The human life is transitory , and ephemeral like a dream . It is like a show of fireworks .

The horses and the elephants or fireworks are only meant to be burnt down .

What does it matter , if the trunk of such an elephant is a little good or a little bad ? After all , is has to be burnt and destroyed in no time .

Why should , then , one lose one's precious peace of mind , be angry or annoyed , at the transitory happenings of this world .

" Imperious Caesar , died and turned to clay ,
Might stop a hole to keep the wind away ;
OH ! that the earth that kept the world in awe
Should patch a hole to expel the winter's flaw .

( Shakespeare )

Another poet says :

" I saw the ordinary birds sitting and chirping at the top of the ruins of palatial mansions which were once the abode of glorious Emperors . The birds were , as if , saying

' Where are those Emperors , and where are those beauties now , who once resided in these palaces ? ' "

Another poet says :

" I once enquired of a wise person , " What is this world ? "

The reply , " It is either a dream , air or a mere story . "

I again enquired , " What sort of person is enamoured of this transitory world ? "

The reply , " One is either a monster , a satan or a mad person . "

Yet another poet says :

" Yes , the worldly life is certainly like a dream . But , unfortunately , we realize this fact at the time of our death , when it is too late .

If it is only like a dream , as it actually is , why should we worry , if the circumstances are in our favour or against us ? Nobody worries about the happenings in the dreams . "

Another poet says :

" What is the use of coming in this world and dying , again and again ? Is it not like the sparks , produced by striking two stones , repeatedly appearing and vanishing ?

Death laughs heartily at our transitory life . In these clouds , we are like lightning , frequently flashing and disappearing .

By the time we open our eyes , death will drown the tiny boat of our life . We are born and destroyed , like bubbles in the river of this life , again and again . "

An English poet says :

" Not for life ,
Which is but a blade , and ear , and husk and grain ,
To the Self living , changeless sesamum !
Nor for this fleeting world ,
Should holy ones speak one word vainly . "

A poet says :—

" Why should we be happy or sorry in respect of the transitory happenings in this world ? We should , as a matter of fact , remember GOD with every breath of ours . "

Thinking on these lines , I pondered over and over again just like Yudhisthara who , in odd circumstances , recollected all that in which Yudhisthara used to lose peace of mind . Yudhisthara used to say internally :

" O ignorant fool ! Now take care . Let bygone be bygone . For future , be cautious to behave properly on such delicate occasions .

Sobriety , patience and peace of mind are most needed on occasions , when someone may insult you , abuse you , spoil your work , intrigue against you or when you are physically or mentally sick .

Otherwise , when all the circumstances are already in your favour it is no big achievement to be peaceful and happy . "

A poet says :

" Do not be displeased or annoyed or show resentment , if any sorrow or trouble visits you . It is against the civilized way of life for generous persons to close the doors against a visitor . It is a sin to insult a visiting guest . "

Another poet says :

" It is no achievement , if you kill a python or a lion . Yes , you have done some good job , if you have controlled and killed your mean selfish desires .

O Alchemist ! What is the use of gaining mastery over the chemistry or mercury , if you have failed to control your own vagrant mind ? "

Taking a cue from the life of Yudhishthara , I am reminded how Yudhishthara used to go knowingly to such places where Duryodhana and others teased and tried to injure the feelings .

But Yudhishthara always successfully practised the lesson ,

" Do not lose your temper " .

By continuous practice , Yudhishthara became very peaceful , after controlling anger . Yudhishthara was very happy , as if a big treasure had been gotten for nothing . All problems were automatically solved .

By personal experience , Yudhishthara was fully convinced that it is wrong to say that the worldly affairs cannot be carried out satisfactorily without losing temper , getting annoyed or worried .

A poet says :

" The lustre of a pearl is not lost during drought or famine . So , too , a sober or a GODly person is not disturbed or worried in adversity . "
